Family-group names in Coleoptera (Insecta) Special Issue (ZooKeys 88)
Patrice Bouchard, Yves Bousquet, Anthony Davies, Miguel Alonso Zarazaga,
John Lawrence, CHC Lyal, Alfred Newton, Chris Reid, M Schmitt, Adam Slipinski,
Andrew Smith, 2011.

Description
In recent years, zoologists have been reviewing the family-group names
in several major orders of animals. One of the goals
of these works is to provide a foundation of valid, accepted names, which
will alleviate the unnecessary proposal of new taxa,
facilitate decisions on priority, promote long-term stability of the classification, and pave the way for the ongoing transition of
taxonomy into the digital age. More than in any other group of living organisms,
the publication of scientific names for the order
Coleoptera has been prolific, both at the species level, and in the suprageneric
ranks, as a result of their exceptional
morphological diversity.
A dedicated team of coleopterists from around the globe have collaborated in a comprehensive review of what is known about the
higher classification and nomenclature of beetles, producing a complete
catalogue of the nearly 5000 known extant and fossil
family-group names for the first time. The data are presented in a classification
framework and the publication dates are given
for the majority of the more than 2500 references cited, in order to assess
both availability and priority of the names.
Although some nomenclatural problems will still need to be addressed in the future, this monograph, the largest of its kind in the
zoological literature, will hopefully go a long way towards achieving the long-term stability of names used in beetle higher classification.

Annotated check list of the Noctuoidea (Insecta, Lepidoptera) of North
America north of Mexico (ZooKeys 40)
D. Lafontaine & C. Schmidt, 2010.
B5, 239pp. 5,700円
ソフトカバー、テキスト:英語
Description:
An annotated check list of the North American species of Noctuoidea (Lepidoptera)
is presented, consisting of 3693 species. One-hundred and sixty-six
taxonomic changes are proposed, consisting of 13 species- group taxa accorded
species status (stat. n. and stat. rev.), 2 revalidated genus-group taxa
(stat. rev.), and 2 family-group taxa raised to subfamily. Sixty-nine species-group taxa are downgraded to junior synonyms or subspecies (stat. n., syn. rev.,
and syn. n.), and
6 genera relegated to synonymy. Sixty-seven new or revised generic combinations
are proposed. No new taxa are described. Six non-native species now
believed to be established in North America are documented for the first
time, namely Simplicia cornicalis (Fabricius, 1794), Nola cucullatella
(Linnaeus,
1758), Tyta luctuosa ([Denis & Schiffermuller], 1775), Oligia latruncula ([Denis & Schiffermuller], 1775), Niphonyx segregata (Butler, 1878) and Hecatera
dysodea ([Denis & Schiffermuller], 1775). The check list is arranged
according to species membership in higher-level taxa (family, subfamily,
tribe, subtribe),
based on the most recent working hypotheses of a comprehensive phylogenetic
framework for the Noctuoidea.

An annotated list of the Lepidoptera of Alberta, Canada (ZooKeys 38)
G. Pohl, G. Anweiler, C. Schmidt and N. Kondla, 2010.
B5, 549pp. 9,500円
ソフトカバー、テキスト:英語
Description:
This checklist of the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) of Alberta lists 2367 species reported to occur in the province, as well as 138 species whose
occurrence in Alberta is probable. Each species entry includes adult flight
time and distribution status in the Cordilleran, Boreal, and Grasslands
ecozones,
as well as references to taxonomic works and to the literature and public
collection sources of the records. Detailed notes on taxonomy, nomenclature,
distribution, habitat, and biology are given for 1524 of the listed species. An additional section provides details on 171 species erroneously reported from
Alberta in previous works. The authors hope it will be a useful resource
for anyone carrying out species-level work on Lepidoptera in western Canada,
or
taxonomic work on Lepidoptera in general. An introductory section provides
a general overview of the order Lepidoptera and the natural regions of
Alberta,
and the history and current state of knowledge of Alberta Lepidoptera. Each of the 63 families (and selected subfamilies) occurring in Alberta is briefly
reviewed, with information on distinguishing features, general appearance,
and general biology. The list is accompanied by an appendix of proposed
nomenclature changes, consisting of revised status for 25 taxa raised from
synonymy to species level, and new synonymy for 20 species-level and one
genus-level taxa here considered to be subjective synonyms, with resultant
revised synonymy for one taxon and formalization of seven new combinations.
